Folkorders & Chalice is the first CD from the collaboration of the recorder sextet Folkorders and the contemporary folk band Chalice.
Chalice is a popular Cotswold-based five-piece band, who play a wide range of instruments including guitars, mandola, electric bass, recorders, whistles and percussion. They all sing, and specialise in close harmony. Since 2011 they have been working with a recorder sextet – Folkorders – in an exciting fusion of folk and recorders. The sextet includes the recorder composer Steve Marshall, who provides the arrangements for the group.
The Folkorders & Chalice group has played several gigs together, including as support band for the well-known folk musician Jez Lowe. In the summer of 2012 they played with great success to 250 people at the course concert of the Cheltenham Recorder Festival. The CD was recorded just before that concert, and includes the same songs that the band played that evening.
The songs include traditional folk, original compositions and classic rock (including the iconic Stairway to Heaven), all given Chalice’s largely acoustic treatment.
