Newsletter No 7

As always, thank you for being on the distribution list for these occasional emails about Playing Days and Courses run by Ann and Steve Marshall, under the banner of ASRE (Ann & Steve’s Recorder Events). Our newsletters are to let you know about significant updates of the ASRE website… http://www.mayhill.co.uk/wpn/courses and to encourage you to visit the site for details.

A particular welcome to those people who are new to our distribution list. But this is not some spamming exercise – we feel very strongly about unwanted emails, so if you do not want to receive these update emails, please let us know and we will delete your details immediately.

We are delighted to report that our Autumn Recorder Orchestra Weekend, taking place on 25-27 November 2016 is nearly full. All accommodation is taken, but we have room for a further half-dozen people as non-resident. Once those places are filled, we will have reached the limit for the larger playing room, which we use for the massed playing sessions. You can register for one of these non-resident places, as well as seeing more information about the weekend on this page…

There is a last-minute opportunity to be a part of the July 2016 Rural Recorder Course. The course takes place at Llanerchindda Farm (near Llandovery) and runs from Wednesday 13 July until Sunday 17 July, and is full – except – someone has to leave us on at midday on Saturday. So if someone wanted to join us after lunch on Saturday until Sunday lunchtime, they could be a part of this event, albeit briefly. The room in question is a double room, so a couple could even just spend a fully-catered day in this beautiful part of the world while not playing the recorder at all. First-come-first-served! Information about the course is here…

The third May Hill Double-Header, conducted by Ann and Steve Marshall (Easier Saturday) and Helen Hooker (Moderate Sunday), will take place on 24/25 September 2016 at May Hill, not far from Gloucester. We believe that the 2016 Double-Header is a ‘dream ticket’ – not only are Steve and Ann going to conduct another Easy Eight-Foot Saturday, but Helen Hooker will be conducting a Moderate Baroque Sunday. We have just four places left for each day, so if you would like to come, you can either send a booking form, or book online from this page…

The third Eight-Foot Course, again at Llanerchindda, and again conducted by Pam Smith is full, bar one place. More accurately, it is a double room that remains, so that could be for two players, or one player and a non-playing partner. The date for the course is Friday 14 October to Monday 17 October. Once again, on this small and specialised course it is important to ensure suitable instrumentation and (reasonably advanced) playing abilities, so please let Ann know if you are interested in taking this last room.

For those who go in for long-term planning, we have already booked dates with Llanerchindda Farm for 2017. Those dates are 26-29 June, 20-24 September and 13-16 October. We intend to have a modest change-around of course content in 2017, and as yet we are not quite sure which course will run on which date, but if you have a 2017 diary handy, you may like to pencil the dates in.

And finally…we run an easy recorder orchestra – the Orchestra on the Hill. ┬áNow in its seventh year, we set up this orchestra to provide a recorder orchestra experience for players of modest technical ability. What started as a tentative experiment has blossomed into a regular and friendly ensemble of about 30 players, which has a great time producing music that benefits from a firm foundation of great basses and contrabasses. We do not work towards public performances, but we exist purely for the pleasure of playing music. The orchestra is conducted by Steve, and we play on one Sunday afternoon a month in May Hill Village Hall. We are always keen to welcome new players, of any size of recorder. If you live anywhere near Gloucester, do come along! Just turn up, as and when you are able to. More details are here…
