Newsletter No 4

August 2015

As always, thank you for being on the distribution list for these occasional emails about Playing Days and Courses run by Ann and Steve Marshall, under the banner of ASRE (Ann & Steve’s Recorder Events). Our newsletters are to let you know about significant updates of the ASRE website… www.mayhill.co.uk/wpn/courses and to encourage you to visit the site for details.

The next ASRE event is the concert featuring Helen Hooker (recorder) and Rosemary Robinson (spinet), as well as the recorder sextet Forest Recorders. The concert takes place at 7.30 on Saturday 5 September at the Parish Rooms, Highnam, near Gloucester. We chose Highnam as a venue, because there is ample parking, it is close to Gloucester, and only about five minutes from the M5. It would be great to welcome you there. Tickets are £10. Details are on the ASRE website, here…

Updates of other ASRE events are…

Both the U3A Recorder Course and the Rural Recorder Course 4 went very well indeed, so much so that we booked the venue for 2016 before we left to go home. In both cases, there was a strong feeling that an extra day would be good, and so the 2016 dates are:

U3A Recorder Course Monday 13 June to Thursday 16 June 2016

Rural Recorder Course 5 Wednesday 13 July to Sunday 17 July 2016

These two courses are not yet on the ASRE website but, as always, if you think you would be interested in coming, please contact Ann to ‘register your interest’. This does not commit you in any way.

The Recorder Playing Day (Redbourn), conducted by Helen Hooker on Sunday 16th August 2015 is nearly full, but if you receive this email in time, and you would like to attend, please contact Ann. The page on the website is…

The second May Hill Double-Header 2015, conducted by Helen Hooker (Multichoir) and Ann and Steve Marshall (Easier Eight-Foot) is on 26-27 September 2015. Both of these days were full with many weeks to go. With such popularity, another one in 2016 seems likely, but our planning has not yet begun.

Finally, we are delighted to report that bookings for the Biggleswade Recorder Orchestra Weekend (23-25 October 2015) are going very well indeed. Organising a new course is always worrying, more so when it is at an untried venue, and even more so when the format of the course – in our case, two simultaneous recorder orchestras – requires healthy numbers for musical success. At the time of writing we have more than 50 bookings, which is ample. However, there is plenty of accommodation, and the playing rooms are large, so we would still welcome more bookings – two orchestras of 40 players each would be fantastic! The details, and a booking form are on the ASRE website, here…www.mayhill.co.uk/wpn/courses/biggleswade-recorder-orchestra-weekend-oct-2015

An at-a-glance summary is that this new course runs from Friday afternoon until Sunday afternoon, 23-25 October 2015. It is to be held at the impressive Mansion House, surrounded by Old Warden Park. The structure of the course is similar to previous recorder orchestra courses, in that each time slot will feature orchestras of both greater and lesser difficulty. The tutors are Helen Hooker, Ruth Burbidge, Ann Marshall and Steve Marshall, who all have a great interest in and much experience of recorder orchestras. There are two residential packages, depending on the type of room, and non-residential is possible too. We hope that the website will answer most of your questions but, if not (and as always), if you need anything else, please don’t hesitate to contact Ann (01452 831654 Email).

Best wishes,
Ann and Steve
