Autumn Recorder Course Oct 2017

Autumn Recorder Course – October 2017

Conducted by Helen Hooker, Ann Marshall and Steve Marshall

Friday 13 October to Monday 16 October 2017

Llanerchindda Farm, near Llandovery

After three years of putting on an Eight-foot course at Llanerchindda, we have decided to change the format a little. The new course, christened the Autumn Recorder Course, is the most technically demanding course that the Marshalls put on; players must be good sight-readers, have very decent technique, and play a variety of instrument sizes, including tenor, probably bass, and hopefully big basses. As a guide to your playing ability in order to ‘fit’ with this course, if you play in an SRP branch we think  it is likely that you are one of the very best players there. Nevertheless, despite the challenging music, entertainment and honest-to-goodness fun are still important ingredients!

As far as we know the structure of this new course is a recorder ‘first’. The idea is that each day we will be immersed in a different recorder repertoire. It may change from year to year, but for 2017 we have the following in mind:

Friday: Renaissance

Saturday: Playing at Eight-foot (yes, we’re still big fans of that!)

Sunday: Jazz

Monday: Baroque

For 2017 we have a new conducting team. Ann and Steve are there, as ever, but in 2017 we will have – direct from sunny Essex – Helen Hooker! We believe that this conducting team is well able to give an interesting (possibly even, to use a word Steve dislikes, ‘insightful’) playing experience for all of these repertoires.

The venue is one of our favourites – Llanerchindda Farm, deep in mid-Wales and not a million miles from Llandovery. The food is excellent, the owners very welcoming, the bedrooms clean and full of character, and the views breathtaking. It’s the perfect venue for a recorder event.

As always, non-playing partners are more than welcome, and we typically have three or more. For the information of potential non-playing partners, they enjoy not only the excellent Llanerchindda food, but also the setting and the possibilities of walking, photography, four-by-four adventure etc in this beautiful part of the world. It’s a highly-recommended short break.

Prices for this Autumn Recorder Course range from £325 to £400, depending on the type of accommodation chosen.

Llanerchindda is a small venue, so we can only have small number of players. It is therefore particularly important that we have a good balance of instrument sizes and reasonably similar playing standards. Therefore, if you would like to come, please let Ann know (on 01452-831654 or ann@mayhill.co.uk). We can’t emphasise enough that it is not first-come-first-served, because we will need to see who is interested before we can decide which combination of players would work well together.

We just have a couple of rooms remaining for this course so, if you like the sound of it, please get in touch with Ann.
