Four Winter Pieces (Sno solo, DD ensembles)
MHE 40903 £3.00
A Frosty Morning
Birds In The Snow
The Frozen Lake
Bells Across The Meadow
Very easy pieces for two groups of descants, with a slightly harder part for a sopranino. Written for schools, but interesting pieces for adults also (who might want to play them on SnoTT). Also available for DTrTB quartet (MHE 40903a).
Introduction & Fantasy for Recorder Trio (DTrT)
MHE 20208 £3.00
A tradition at the Northern Recorder Course is that the student concert includes a performance by the Aries Gemshorn Trio, led by Janice Ormerod. This was written for the 2008 course, and is here transcribed for recorders. Quite easy, but an interesting three minute piece. Also available for TrTB recorders; see the next piece (MHE 20208a).

Three Pieces For Recorder Trio (DTrToptB)

Another piece originally written for the Aries Gemshorn Trio. I tried to write something which sounded somewhat mediaeval, while still being contemporary. The pieces work well on descant, treble and tenor recorders, and I have put them in such a key that bass recorders can also play by doubling the tenors at the octave.
Fantasia No 11 (Lupo) (DTrB)
MHE 31107 £4.00
This short fantasia, originally for three viols, achieves great beauty with the simplest of means. Ann and I have produced an edition which enables groups to dip their toes in the water of unbarred music - there is a score and parts with barlines, but then a version without barlines (as the original) for those who want a better understanding of why barlines can be an unwanted distraction. It sounds even more beautiful on TBCtB, and a bass clef version of the treble part is provided.
Three Fantasias in 3 Parts (Byrd) (TrTB)
MHE 20909 £4.50
Fantasia I
Fantasia II
Fantasia III
William Byrd's short three-part fantasias, originally for viols, are a marvel of imitative invention using small-scale resources. I believe that the only editions of these pieces previously available were designed primarily for playing on viols, leading to recorder players having to change instruments for each fantasia, and play 'up the octave' or from unfamiliar clefs. This new edition makes life easier, and all three fantasias fit nicely on treble, tenor and bass recorders.
Three Madrigals for Recorder Trio Set 1 (DTrT)
MHE 40906 £4.50
As Fair As Morn
O What Shall I Do?
Though Philomela Lost Her Love
Little gems of three-part madrigal writing. These pieces may not be new to recorder players, but this is a new edition (by Steve & Ann Marshall), which tries to give as much help as possible to groups of limited experience who are unfamiliar with the conventions which often apply to music of this period. There are crotchet beats throughout, clear indications of what to do at changes of time signature, fully written-out repeats, and many other useful features.

Exploits the rich sounds of this unusual group of instruments, while still featuring some crisp and incisive rhythms. Of similar difficulty to Trios 1&2.

Recorder Trio No 5 (DTrB)

This trio is quite difficult, needing agility and – in the slow movement – very good breath control. The total performance time is about 10 minutes.
Five Shades Of Blue (DTB)
MHE 10703 £6.50
Swing
Fugato
Ballad
Funk
The Twenties
A suite of pieces in different blues styles - from the 1920s up to 1980s funk. Bristling with accidentals and jazzy rhythms, but perfectly playable for competent trios who like jazz. I rearranged these pieces for the Tallgrass Trio (violin, clarinet and bassoon), and they can be seen playing Swing, Ballad and The Twenties here
Three Lyrics from the Country (contralto voice, TrTB)
MHE 10709 £7.00
The Top of the Hanger
Treading the Cotswold Way
Travelling
These are settings of three poems by Judy Kendall, which are included in her book 'The Drier The Brighter'. The pieces were written at the request of the recorder trio Polyphonica, who were performing with the countertenor Robert Cross. Although the sound of a countertenor is unique, the voice part (from A to C, a 10th higher) is ideal for a contralto, and indeed works with most other voice types as well.
