Blues On The Hill (DTrTBGtBCtB) MHE 20110 £3.50
Ann Marshall wrote this easy-going blues for a local 'easy' recorder orchestra - the Orchestra on the Hill. With its relaxed tempo and straight quavers, the piece shouldn't pose too many technical challenges, despite a bit of chromatic movement here and there. Playing time is about three minutes.

Kyrie (A Gabrieli) (DTrTBGtBCtB) MHE 41109 £3.50
Andrea Gabrieli (1532-1585) was the uncle of Giovanni Gabrieli and a major musical figure in his own right. This Kyrie is a stand-alone mass part, perhaps one of several such mass parts written when Japanese princes visited Venice. Ann Marshall's arrangement takes full advantage of the 'small recorder orchestra' instrumentation.

Three Anthems by Thomas Tomkins (DTrTB) MHE 10808 £4.00
I Am The Resurrection

O Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem

I Know That My Redeemer Liveth

These three short but beautiful anthems by Thomas Tomkins are brought within the reach of a DTrTB recorder quartet by Ann Marshall’s arrangements. The pieces may not be well-known to recorder players, as the originals were in awkward recorder keys and/or used unusual vocal combinations (for example SSTB). Total playing time is about 4 minutes

Serenade to The Holy Family (Berlioz) (DTrTBGtBCtB) MHE 10909 £4.00
Ann Marshall's arrangement of an orchestral interlude from 'The Childhood of Christ' by Berlioz. Composed in the early 1850s, this is hardly core recorder repertoire, but the beautiful tune and harmonies make it irresistible. Total playing time is about 3 minutes.

Three Water Pieces (DTrTB) MHE 31206a £5.00
Calypso Cove

The Waterfall

Caught In The Rain

More tuneful music from Ann Marshall. They are interesting pieces, but at the same time easy and happy-sounding. Recorder groups of even limited technical ability will take to them immediately! For a higher setting, see the next piece (MHE 31206).

Full Of Eastern Promise (DTrTBB) MHE 10606 £5.00
March To The Oasis

Night-Time In The Scented Garden

The Street Market

A suite of three pieces which are full of Ann Marshall's trademark good-humoured and memorable tunes. Great fun. Not difficult, but Middle-Eastern-sounding augmented seconds abound, which may not fall under the fingers to begin with.

Fair's Fair (DTrTB) MHE 20610 £6.00
Scarborough Fair (Ann's)

Scarborough Fair (Steve's)

Brigg Fair (Steve's)

Brigg fair (Ann's)

We made these arrangements for a playing session at the 2010 Cheltenham Recorder Festival, which we had been invited to share. The manner of the sharing had been left up to us, so we decided that we would each write an arrangement of both Scarborough Fair and (the less well-known) Brigg Fair, and that in the session Ann would conduct one of hers and one of Steve's – and vice versa! Despite this complex idea, we hope you will find the arrangements tuneful and interesting! They are on the easy side of moderate.

Four Easter Choruses (DTrTB) MHE 71008 £6.00
This Joyful Eastertide

God So Loved The World

Easter Morning

O Thou Whose Sweet Compassion

Especially compared to the vast amount of Christmas music, there is very little Easter music, and even less available for recorders. Ann Marshall has arranged four choruses drawn from various sources, by far the best known in the UK being Stainer's Crucifixion. All of the pieces are late Victorian or Edwardian, and what the composers have in common is that they studied composition in England, although one was Irish, and one American. The pieces are easy/moderate.

Godric's Castle (SnoDDTrTrTTBBGtBCtB) MHE 60810 £7.00
This five-minute tone poem by Ann Marshall is of no more than moderate difficulty. It suggested itself to her when visiting Goodrich (or, a thousand years ago 'Godric's') Castle, in the Wye Valley. The (Royalist) castle was besieged during the English Civil War and Alice Birch, niece of one of the besieging forces fled to the castle to be with her sweetheart. The story goes that when it was clear that the castle would fall, the two tried to flee across the River Wye on horseback, but were swept to their deaths. The story further goes that their ghosts can sometimes be seen in the castle, looking out across the valley, and that they can even sometimes be seen urging a ghostly horse into the Wye. It's a great tale, and while the piece is not supposed to represent the details of the story, hopefully it conjures up a suitable atmosphere.

Bundles of Riffs (DTrTrTTB) MHE 11009 £7.00
Bundle One

Bundle Two

Bundle Three

For the uninitiated, riffs are short musical ideas which are repeated often. Each piece in this set combines two or three (mildly bluesy) riffs in very rhythmic music. Because of the emphasis on rhythm, these pieces are not as easy as others by Ann Marshall.

Dance Suite for Recorder Sextet (DTrTrTTB) MHE 30509 £7.50
Folk Dance

Waltz

Jig

Country Waltz

Ann Marshall wrote this suite for groups looking for tuneful music on the easier side of moderate. There are no crotchet triplets, the keys are easy, and there is precisely one note higher than three-fingers-and-pinched (a D in treble 1). Total playing time is about eight minutes.

Islands In The Sun (DTrTrTB) MHE 21208 £8.50
Bequia Island

Beach Party on Mayreau

Sunset Over Mustique

Hot Sun...and Golden Rum

Ann Marshall's Islands In The Sun comprises four musical postcards from the Grenadines – a collection of small islands in the West Indies. Unsurprisingly, tourism is important for the islands - beaches, sunshine, parties, and even modest amounts of rum feature heavily in holidays in the Grenadines, and these are reflected in the cheerful music, which is laden with calypso rhythms and occasional hints of reggae. Total playing time is about 10 minutes.

From The Mountains To The Sea (SnoDDTrTrTTBBGtBCtB) MHE 10210 £10.00
This piece pictures the course of a river, from springs in the mountains, passing through upland valleys, dangerous rapids and serene woodlands, finally crossing the plains as a large river, which meets the sea. Ann Marshall's piece is dedicated to Dietrich Schnabel, with thanks for his constant encouragement. This 9-minute piece is of no more than moderate difficulty.

Ann Marshall has packed lots of terrific tunes into a total playing time of 12 minutes. These fun and rhythmic pieces are easier than normal recorder orchestra fare, so they may appeal to orchestras looking for some lighter music which they can easily get to grips with, as well as finding favour at the 'easy recorder orchestra' events which are quickly becoming popular.

Four Double Choir Motets by Jacob Gallus (DTrTB/DTrTB) MHE 21109 £12.00
Adoramus te, Jesu Christe

Quo mihi crude dolor tantum dominare

Duo Seraphim

O Magnum Mysterium

Jacob Gallus (1550-1591) was also known as Handl. He was Slovenian, but worked for most of his life in Austria. His output was enormous, including much complex multichoir music. Ann Marshall has selected four of his more straightforward double choir pieces, but there is still a lot going on in this music, in terms of harmony and interplay between the choirs.

Four Watercolours of a Country Church (DTrTB/DTrTB) MHE 30809 £12.00
The Church at Sunrise

The Old Bell Tower

The Graveyard at Dusk

The Church Fête

These double choir pieces by Ann Marshall are musical impressions of watercolours of one of those quintessentially English churches which are hidden away in the depths of the countryside. On a practical note, it can be difficult to persuade recorder ensembles to move into double choir formation, and this suite works perfectly well as a normal DDTrTrTTBB ensemble.

Sinfonietta (SnoDDTrTrTTBBGtBCtB) MHE 10508 £14.00
Vivace

Moderato

Minuet & Trio

Rondo

The many people who enjoy Ann Marshall's tuneful music will be eager to try this 4-movement Sinfonietta. The piece may currently occupy a category all of its own, as it is a substantial piece for orchestra which is nevertheless easy to play - it is well within the capabilities of a group such as an SRP branch. Both players and audience will warm to its sunny disposition, presented within the familiar framework of a traditional symphony.
